Money arrived at once
An inheritance, a settlement, or you sold something. You don't want to look back in three years and wonder where it went.
First
Do nothing,
on purpose.
Money that arrives all at once tends to leave the same way. Not through anything dramatic — through a series of individually reasonable decisions made faster than they should have been.
The most valuable move in the first weeks is to park it somewhere safe and boring while you work out what it's for. There's no prize for deploying it quickly, and the urgency you feel is rarely coming from the money.
Expect people to appear with ideas. Some will be well meant. Some will be someone else's opportunity.
Then, in order
What to work
through.
Find out what it actually is
An inherited IRA behaves very differently from a taxable brokerage account or cash. The account type drives the rules and the deadlines.
Check the tax treatment
Inherited retirement accounts carry distribution requirements. Getting these wrong is expensive and often can't be undone.
Clear high-interest debt
Rarely the exciting answer, frequently the highest-return use of the money.
Then decide what it's for
Retirement, a house, a cushion, a business. The purpose sets the timeline, and the timeline determines the investments.
Inherited accounts
The rules are
specific.
If you've inherited an IRA or Roth IRA, you'll likely need a Beneficiary IRA rather than moving the money into your own account. These exist to hold inherited assets under the correct tax rules, and deadlines apply.
Distribution requirements vary depending on your relationship to the person who died and when they passed. This is an area where acting before understanding causes real damage.

An hourly session at $125 is usually the right size for thinking this through, with no ongoing commitment. See all options.
