Capital B Advisory
You run a business
You pay yourself last, and retirement keeps landing at the bottom of that list. Nobody hands you a form on your first day when the first day was your own.
The situation
The company
is fine. You're
the gap.
It's the most consistent thing about business owners who call. Payroll goes out, vendors get paid, equipment gets replaced — and the owner's own retirement slides another quarter.
Part of it is time. Part is that setting up a retirement plan is research nobody assigns you, and it never becomes urgent until it's late.
I've run Jersey Junkers®, a junk removal company in Monmouth County, since 2012 and still do. So this one is familiar rather than theoretical.
The main options
Three accounts
worth knowing.
SEP IRA
Straightforward to open and administer, with high contribution limits relative to income. Funded by the business. Common for sole proprietors and owners without employees.
Solo 401(k)
For self-employed people with no employees other than a spouse. Allows both employee and employer contributions, which can mean more total room than a SEP at some income levels.
Roth Solo 401(k)
The same structure, funded with after-tax dollars for tax-free growth instead of a deduction today.
SIMPLE IRA
Built for small businesses with employees, up to 100. Less administration than a full 401(k), with employer matching options.
What it costs
An hour
usually
settles it.
Which plan fits turns on your business structure, whether you have employees, how you take income, and how much you actually want to set aside. Two owners with identical revenue can land on different answers.
An hourly session at $125 usually covers it. We look at how you're set up, compare what each plan would allow in your situation, and you leave knowing which to open.
General information only, not tax or legal advice. Capital B doesn't provide tax preparation — coordinate with your accountant, who may need to weigh in on contribution timing and deductions.
Next step
Twenty minutes.
No cost.
Nothing to prepare and nothing to bring. If I'm not the right fit, I'll tell you on the call.
